Super Cowboy Rides~ My Review

If there is one thing that I love, it's to have quiet time to relax and read a good book. I was given the opportunity to review this book, "Super Cowboy Rides" by Daris Howard. I was thrilled to be doing this book review, but I have to say it was a challenge. Reading this was easy and delightful, but finding the quiet moment of peace where I could sit and read, now that was a Challenge!

The moments when I was able to read, I was delighted to be swept away into a child's mindset, and see the world through the main character Tommy's eyes. A sweet, innocent but mischievous five year old coming up into the world, and learning some hard lessons about life along the way, he was a fun character to follow. With wisdom above his years, yet still so much to learn.

A child of a farmer the scene is set, house, barn, and fields where little Tommy spends his time dreaming of being a Super Cowboy. There are many simple scenes where Tommy finds himself at the mercy of his older brother's shenanigans.
I personally grew up in the country, we were far from being farmers, but we had a large barn. My sister and I along with our cousins loved to play up in the large hay loft. The stories of Tommy and his older brother making a swing in the loft, brought back so many fun memories from my child hood.

(spoiler alert) The main character, Tommy suffers the loss of some dear friends along the way, that made me cry like a baby. All I will say is, I've recently lost the same type of friend as Tommy does in the story, and I identified with the sadness.(end) There are lots of funny moments as well, moments where Tommy's older brother sends him to do all the work in catching a cat to test out his parachute prototype! Haha. I can't begin to tell you how many times as kids my cousins and I would throw things out the window in the top of the hay loft. Never a cat, but I'm sure my one cousin had thought about it.

Whether you grew up in the country or city, this book has so many moments that we can all identify with. Showing up for the first day of school and feeling all alone. Missing your past childhood freedoms.  Just being a kid, and knowing in your heart you are that Super Cowboy. Of course for each of us it's different, for me I was a Super Nurse, Super Marine Biologist, and a Super Orphan( I had a long stint of wanting to be Annie) Whatever it is that I spent my childhood days dreaming about, I can smile when reading "Super Cowboy Rides" because it takes me back to those dreams. ~Beck
